I did some follow-up digging on this (which took ages) and I have some details to update with here. Costco says:

Dear Evan,

We appreciate you taking the time to email Costco Wholesale.
I am sorry that is has taken awhile to get back to you, I have received the following e-mail in regards to your question.
Corn Sugar is the term allowed for Dextrose. It has been the policy of The Long Company for as long as the labeling laws have existed to choose to list dextrose as corn sugar. It has nothing to do with High Fructose Corn Syrup. Unfortunately, the HFCS fight to allow HFCS to be labeled as corn sugar will make this get even more convoluted.
Thank you,

Brenda
Costco Wholesale Corporation

So, a couple of things to emphasize:
1) Corn Sugar TODAY still just means Dextrose (which is just a type of Glucose, which in this case comes naturally from corn)
2) Corn Sugar IN THE FUTURE may well mean "secret HFCS" if the corn lobby gets their nefarious way (see http://www.cornsugar.com/)
3) And perhaps most important... the very tasty All-American Chocolate cake does NOT have HFCS in it. Whew!

Reading this remembrance, I thought back over my 78 years and took stock of my greatest teachers. Two head the list. Miss Dorothy Tredennick, who taught the art section of our introduction to the humanities course at Berea College in the 1950s, and Robert Lowell at Boston University in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Both of these remarkable teachers allowed their students to touch and experience a level of reality that transformed their lives. Miss Tredennick showed me Italy a decade and a half before I set foot in the country. Mr. Lowell gave me the gift of hearing W. S. Merwin read his poems. My life was never the same again.

Hi Jodi. I didn't know you have time to write this much about what's going on in your life. It is quite delightful to read. I also want to know which hospital you are at and your email. Just want to see what's going on over there on the east coast. Thanks and have a good day.

How ironic is it that you're from Seattle! I'm working on my UW application here in Charleston and am researching the South Carolina Society Hall to include in my essay. I stumbled across your blog, as the photo of Mt. Rainier caught my attention. Being an instructor of Cotillion for these past two years, I can say that you did indeed pick a great place to get married! I didn't know that Colbert learned from Mrs. Whipple, too, but I will certainly imagine young Stephen waltzing around when I come in on Wednesdays from now on.

I agree! It was the best toy and I wish I could find one for my granddaughter, my very first grandchild. Both of my children loved it and I wish we had kept it, but as yet it has not surfaced. It had a very pleasing, unobnoxious sound and was definitely a favorite. I always thought that would be part of any baby gift I gave in the future, but have been unable to find them. Please, please bring them back!
